Parawing Foiling: Gear, Skills and WA Conditions

The first proper gust hits across the bank at Sorrento, your foil lifts, and the little wing in your hands has done its job. Rather than holding power all the way down the coast, you collapse it, stow it and surf the bumps. That is the appeal of parawing foiling: a compact wind engine that gets you onto foil, then gets out of the way when the ocean starts doing the work.
It is one of the most exciting directions in foiling right now, particularly for riders who already enjoy downwinders, prone foiling or wing foiling but want less gear in their hands once they are flying. It is not simply wing foiling with a smaller wing, though. The launch, body position, foil choice and safety decisions are different. Get those right and a windy WA afternoon can become a serious stretch of foiling freedom.
What is parawing foiling?
A parawing is a small, bridled ram-air wing flown with a control bar or handles. It uses the wind to pull a rider onto foil, usually for downwind riding. Once established on the foil, the rider depowers the parawing, gathers it into a compact bundle and continues riding the swell unassisted.
Think of it as sitting somewhere between kite foiling and downwind foiling. A kite has far more power, flying lines and launch complexity. A handheld wing is easier to manage around the beach and can remain useful in lulls, but it stays in your hands while you ride. A parawing is designed around the moment you no longer need wind power.
That makes it especially compelling for ocean runners. Instead of paddling hard to get a downwind board moving, or relying on an e-foil assist, you can use the wind to start, then focus on linking swells. For a rider wanting to travel light, the wing can pack down small enough to fit in a vest, harness pocket or purpose-built stowage system.
Why WA riders are paying attention
Perth’s sea breeze, open coast and long downwind possibilities make this more than a novelty. When the Fremantle Doctor is properly established and there is enough wind swell or groundswell in the mix, a parawing can offer access to runners that would otherwise demand strong paddling fitness or a lift shuttle.
The trade-off is that our conditions can be punchy. A sea breeze can build quickly, shorebreak can complicate the launch, and wind direction matters more than many first-timers expect. Side-onshore conditions are generally more forgiving than dead onshore winds, while offshore conditions add obvious risk and are not a place to learn.
Parawing foiling also suits riders who want a lower-profile setup for travelling or remote missions. There is less canopy than a full wing, no long kite lines across the beach, and less bulk than carrying multiple large wings. But compact does not mean simple. The equipment still needs careful selection and a proper pre-flight check.
The gear that makes the session work
A complete parawing setup has four working parts: the parawing and bar, a board, a hydrofoil, and a safe method of stowing the wing. The best combination depends on your weight, local wind strength, ability to pump the foil, and whether your priority is getting up easily or chasing faster, more critical bumps.
Parawing size and control system
Parawings are sized for wind range, rider weight and foil efficiency. Bigger sizes create more low-end pull and can make getting onto foil easier, but they also have more fabric to manage and more power to depower in a gust. Smaller sizes are tidy in strong wind but demand cleaner technique and a foil that lifts early.
For most riders, choosing by the strongest wind you expect is a mistake. Choose a size that will let you get moving in the typical wind at your intended location, with a sensible safety margin. A consistent 18-knot sea breeze asks a different question to a gusty 25-knot afternoon near a headland.
Look closely at the bar, bridle layout and depower system. You need to be able to sheet in smoothly to generate power, depower immediately when overpowered, and gather the wing without tangling lines around your hands, board or foil. If you cannot confidently reset the wing in the water, stay close to shore while learning.
Board volume and shape
A little extra volume is your mate when starting. It allows you to stand or kneel in control while the parawing develops pull, then rise onto foil without rushing the movement. A dedicated downwind board with a longer waterline can release earlier and carry speed through lulls, which is useful when the wind is marginal or the bumps are widely spaced.
Experienced prone foilers may prefer a smaller board, but that choice narrows the margin for error. You are managing a wing, a foil and ocean movement at once. Starting on an overly sinky board can turn every launch into a swim and every reset into frustration.
Foil selection
Early lift and predictable pitch are far more valuable than outright speed while you are learning. A larger front wing with a stable profile gets you flying sooner and gives you time to work out the parawing. As your technique improves, a more efficient mid-aspect or high-aspect foil will glide farther between bumps and reward active pumping.
Match the mast length to your usual water depth and comfort level. A shorter mast can be more manageable in shallow water and during early touch-downs. A longer mast provides extra clearance once you are linking swell, but it raises the consequences of a bad fall and needs deeper launch water.
Check every foil screw, mast connection and board track before heading out. Saltwater, sand and repeated foil loads are hard on hardware. A tiny amount of movement in the mast or fuselage feels much bigger when the wing is pulling you sideways.
How to get up and stow the parawing
The first goal is not a kilometre-long downwinder. It is a controlled 50-metre flight, a clean depower, and a safe recovery. Begin in deep water away from swimmers, jetties, reef and other riders. Make sure there is a broad downwind area with no surprises.
Start on your knees or feet depending on the board and water state. Keep the board pointed slightly downwind rather than trying to edge hard across the wind. Sheet the parawing in progressively, let the board build speed, then rise smoothly onto foil. Pulling aggressively with your arms usually sends the board off line or overloads the foil.
Once flying, lower the parawing and find a stable glide before trying to pack it away. Depower first. Then use the manufacturer’s intended gathering method, keeping control lines clear and away from the foil. The stowing motion needs practice on land before you attempt it in open water.
Do not force the stow if conditions are messy. It is completely fine to keep the parawing flying while you regain balance, move clear of traffic or ride through a difficult section. The best riders make the conservative choice early, not after something has gone wrong.
Safety is part of the progression
Parawing foiling should be treated as an open-water discipline, not a casual beach toy. You need a quick-release system you understand, a leash setup appropriate to the equipment, impact protection and a plan for what happens if the wind drops or the wing tangles.
A helmet and impact vest are sensible, especially while learning. A bright vest or high-visibility top also helps a support crew or other water users spot you in wind chop. Carry a communication device in a waterproof pouch for longer runs where practical, and tell someone your launch point, route and planned finish.
Be particularly cautious around foil traffic. A fallen parawing can be difficult for others to see in textured water, and lines or bridles can create a hazard if another rider passes too close. Give everyone more room than you think they need. If a launch zone is busy, wait for a clearer window or choose another spot.
Practise self-rescue in light, controlled conditions. Can you depower and retrieve the wing? Can you keep the foil clear while managing fabric and bridles? Can you paddle or swim the board if the wind vanishes? Those answers matter more than whether you can briefly fly in a strong gust.
Who should try it first?
The easiest transition is usually for a competent wing foiler or kite foiler who can already start reliably, ride a foil comfortably in chop and recover from falls without panic. Prone and downwind foilers bring valuable board and swell-reading skills, though they may need time to learn wind handling.
Absolute beginners to foiling should build their foundations first. Learn foil control behind a boat, on an e-foil or through wing foiling lessons before adding a parawing. Combining first-time foiling with a powered, bridled wing is a big workload and can slow down the fun.
