What an impact vest actually does
An impact vest uses layered foam panels to cushion your torso. It spreads the force of a hit across a wider area, adds warmth on a breezy day and gives a little extra flotation while you are sorting out your kite, board or lines. For learners, that extra confidence can be valuable. You spend more time in the water, body dragging, resetting the board and working through crashes than an experienced rider carving upwind.
The key point is that an impact vest is not automatically a personal flotation device, or PFD. Most are designed for flexibility and impact absorption first, not for keeping an unconscious rider face-up. If your local spot, school, event or boating situation calls for an approved buoyancy aid, check the relevant certification and use the correct equipment. Do not assume a padded kitesurf vest meets that requirement.
Think of it as a sensible layer in a bigger safety setup: capable kite control, conservative conditions, a working quick release, a helmet where appropriate and a riding mate nearby. It protects the body from some consequences, not the cause of a poor decision.

The right vest changes with the discipline. Freeride riders generally want low-profile foam, unrestricted shoulder movement and a shape that sits cleanly beneath a waist harness. A vest that feels barely noticeable while cruising will be worn more often, which matters more than buying the thickest option and leaving it in the car.
For big-air riding, wake-style tricks and park sessions, a more substantial vest makes good sense. Hard landings and occasional board contact are part of pushing progression. Look for segmented foam panels through the ribs, sternum and back, with enough flex to grab your bar, steer aggressively and rotate without feeling bound up.
Wave riders often prioritise mobility and a secure fit. Paddling, ducking under shorebreak and moving quickly around the board call for a vest that does not ride up. Foil riders may prefer a clean, slim design that will not snag or bunch while kneeling, waterstarting or managing a board with a sharp carbon wing below. The potential for high-speed falls is real, but a bulky vest can also make getting back onto a foil board awkward.
Beginners can benefit from slightly more coverage and a straightforward front zip. You are likely to be wearing it for long stretches, often over a wetsuit, so comfort has a direct effect on learning. A vest should help you stay relaxed, not make you feel like you are wrestling your gear before you even launch.
Waist harness or seat harness matters
Your harness is the deciding factor many riders miss. A waist harness needs a vest with a shorter cut or a harness-compatible lower panel. If the vest overlaps the harness too much, it can bunch at the ribs, push upwards during a crash and make it harder to keep the harness positioned correctly.
Seat harness users usually have more room around the waist, but they should still check that the vest does not catch on straps or ride high when the kite pulls. Put both items on together, tighten them as you would for a session and mimic the stance you use while riding. Reach overhead, twist side to side and crouch. Any pinching on dry land will be worse after an hour in chop.
Fit is where protection starts
Impact vests should feel snug, not restrictive. Foam absorbs water and the vest can loosen slightly once wet, so a relaxed fit in the shop often becomes a sloppy fit on the water. You should be able to take a full breath, rotate your shoulders and look over either shoulder without resistance. At the same time, you should not be able to pull the vest several centimetres away from your torso.
Check the armholes carefully. Too tight and they rub beneath the arms during long reaches. Too loose and the vest can shift, exposing the ribs and sternum when you hit the water. The hem should stay below the chest and above the part of your harness that needs to sit against your body.
Women should look for a women-specific cut rather than simply sizing down a unisex vest. The panel shaping, chest fit and armhole position make a genuine difference to comfort and stability. It is also worth trying a vest over the wetsuit you wear most. A 2 mm spring suit, a steamer and a bare torso all alter the fit.
If you are between sizes, do not decide from the label alone. Different brands use different cuts and foam thicknesses. Try the smaller size first if it still allows full breathing and movement. The right answer is the one that stays planted when wet, without restricting your riding position.
Features worth paying for
Not every feature is essential, but the construction details show up after a few sandy, salty sessions. Segmented foam is generally more comfortable than one large rigid panel because it bends with your torso. Full or half front zips make changing easier, while pull-over designs can feel cleaner and less bulky across the chest.
Look closely at the zip, stitching and edging. A quality zip should run smoothly and sit flat when closed. Soft binding around the armholes helps prevent rubbing, while reinforced seams are worthwhile for riders who regularly launch in wind, sand and salt spray. A small attachment point for a safety knife can be handy, provided it is accessible and the knife is secured properly.
Colour is more than a style choice in busy WA waters. Brighter panels can make you easier for a mate, instructor or support craft to spot, particularly in late-afternoon glare or rougher conditions. Black remains popular and hides wear well, but visibility is a fair trade-off to consider.
Don’t confuse flotation with a safety plan
Extra foam can make treading water easier, but it does not replace self-rescue skills. Before relying on a vest, practise using your quick release, packing down a kite and returning to shore in controlled conditions. Know the launch area, wind direction, tide, boat traffic and the downwind exit before you connect your lines.
This is especially relevant on strong seabreeze days. Before each session, inspect the zip, seams and foam panels. If the foam has become compressed, the stitching is opening or the vest is noticeably looser than when new, it is time to replace it. Protection gear is not the place to squeeze out one more season.
